Configurability Strategy: A Competitive Advantage

To gain a competitive advantage, manufacturing companies that sell complex products are implementing a configurability strategy that provides more options using fewer resources. Learn about the two interrelated phases of a configurability strategy: developing the product—which emphasizes the essential functionality of a product configurator—and executing the lead-to-order (LTO) process in a lean manufacturing environment.

ac power sources  Optimizing Configurability: A Balancing Ac t To reemphasize, the goal is to gain competitive advantage by offering a greater variety of product options and variations with less, or more efficient use of resources. However, unlimited variety may not be economical, risking an increase in non-value added costs. Optimizing configurability, therefore, is a balancing act ' weighing the additional value of more product options and variations compared with any additional costs required. For instance, some Read More

Collaborative Analytics: Sharing and Harvesting Analytic Insights Across the Business

Sadly, a division exists between business analysts and IT—they often perform separate data-related duties. There are benefits for companies that unite business analytics with business intelligence. But the adaptive information cycle—a model linking the center-out approach of traditional data warehousing to the emergent prototyping typifying today’s analytic environment—is not as complex as it may sound. Learn more.

These people then become the hubs of networks of shared analytic function. While sharing at a group level is Read More

The Power of Inventory Control: How Integrated, Serialized Inventory Tracking Delivers a Competitive Advantage

Today’s manufacturers work hard to meet customer delivery schedules with quality parts while reducing costs. Those companies that can meet these demands can reduce work-in-process inventories and minimize production costs. But many fail at this due to inefficient material handling and inventory control. See how advanced ERP systems reflect the physical reality of the material handling process and can help you reduce inventory costs.

Eco-mode: Benefits and Risks of Energy-saving Modes of UPS Operation

Many newer uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) systems have an energy-saving operating mode known as “eco-mode” or by some other descriptor. Nevertheless, surveys show that few data centers actually use this mode, because of the known or anticipated side effects. Unfortunately, the marketing materials for these operating modes do not adequately explain the cost/benefit tradeoffs. This paper shows that eco-mode provides a reduction of approximately 2% in data center energy consumption and explains the various limitations and concerns that arise from eco-mode use. Situations where these operating modes are recommended and contraindicated are also described.

Enabling Technologies for Power and Cooling

In stark contrast to a few years ago, IT executives now rank power and cooling among their top concerns. As IT continues to support more servers, power and cooling have become limiting factors to the number of data center servers. However, there is a solution. Blade server thermal technology optimizes power and cooling while improving energy monitoring—real benefits that reduce the overall IT total cost of ownership (TCO).

Case Study: Faronics Power Save and Newport Independent School

Newport Independent school district’s implementation of a formal energy-conservation policy created problems for the district-wide computer system. Rather than having to manually shut down up to 900 computers at the end of every day, the district’s head IT technician opted to centralize control with Faronic’s Power Save technology. The final result: a solution that is both environmentally and fiscally responsible.
